Grey Gables Residential Care Home was founded by the Late Alderman and Mrs S J Grey, Lord Mayor and Mayoress of Birmingham 1934-36.


It was due to the foresight of Alderman and Mrs Grey that Grey Gables came into being. They recognised the need for a home where elderly ladies who for various reasons were unable to maintain their own homes could be cared for, as at that time no such accommodation existed. For some years now Grey Gables has also welcomed gentleman residents.


The property at Fox Hollies Road, Acocks Green was originally known as 'Mayfield'. It was decided to change the name to 'Lady Mayoress House' but in 1944, at the request of the City, the name was changed to Grey Gables in order to perpetuate the name of the founders and so avoid confusion.


Grey Gables is a Registered Charity (Registration Number 227258), the management of which is vested in its committee whose personnel give their services voluntarily.


The Lord Mayor or Lady Mayoress of the City is invited annually to hold the office of President of Grey Gables.

Grey Gables registered as a charity on 9th August 1963. But what exactly does this mean?


In simple terms, all money raised by the care home, goes back into the care home, to help provide residents with the high standard of care and services that they have come to expect from us.


From food, to staffing to regeneration and essential repairs, to organising activities for the residents of Grey Gables, funding for these comes from trusts and funds from around the city and various benefactors. We ensure that all monies are put towards buying new equipment to aid residents in their day to day activities, continual refurbishment of individual rooms, the expansion and maintenance of our wonderful gardens and in the general improvement of the home in keeping with the ethos of our Founders.


Our objectives and activities as a charity are to provide sympathetic and personal care to the residents according to their needs, especially to those who require additional care and attention whilst maintaining at all times the independence, integrity and dignity of the residents.

At Grey Gables

We have a variety of activities including:

  • small concerts
  • quizzes
  • bingo
  • animal therapy
  • aromatherapy
  • local supported outings.


We also celebrate major holidays by changing menus and having firework displays. External entertainment also come into the home, a list of upcoming events is on display at reception and in lifts, copies are also available for anyone who requests these.
